This is the first piece i wrote as a masters student in the summer/fall of 1999. It was meant to be symbolic of my "Shift" from the east coast to the west coast and the "Shift" the piece makes from whole tone to chromatic. I was pretty into Ligeti's piano etudes at the time, for which the ending of this has clear influence.

my favorite bit is what is labeled as mm. 98-124.

Unfortunately the two live performances of this had rough spots that i'm picky about, so the included audio here is a doctored MIDI rendition.

-edit- so i've been trying to respond to the questions asked of me in the comments section, but for some reason my comments aren't sticking. So the answer is: the program is called Finale. www.makemusic.com. the competitor to Finale as a music notation program is Sibelius.

  • I think a lot is lost in the midi version. I myself would prefer to hear a live recording with a mistake or two than a poorly rendered digital version. I would love to hear how it sounds using real instruments as I find it hard to clearly judge it when listening to this version.

  • yeah, fair enough. the decision was also because it made it easier to do the score follow thing. if you look at my other video for "remembrance", that's a score follow with a live performance, and the score follow isn't effective at all. not sure how to deal with that yet.

  • poor effort, more than embarrassing! sorry!

  • you're entitled to your opinion, it's cool. sorry you don't like it.
