Except Chita Rivera who nailed this role on Broadway in 1957 and later in the West End production. If you have ever seen her dance, boy it is magical. Also they modified a lot of the choreography for Rita. Chita's was a lot harder and faster. The woman had fire under her feet.

I don't think anyone could have done Bernardo as well as Chakiris - who incidentally, played Riff in the West End production in London. Go figure!

. i agree with u. i think natalie wood did a wonderfull Maria. george play a great Bernardo. but in a movie like this y cast pepole that r not latinos have them fake a puerto rican accent, when they can cast the real thing. then again this movie was made in 1960 back they it was hard for latinos to land a decent role. but if they ever make a remake of wss in this time. it wolud be very nice that the entaire puerto rican characters to be play by real latinos.

that kind of annoys me sometimes. I like all of the actors in the movie, but it would've been cool if they casted more Puerto Rican actors. I'm sure that Puerto Ricans are just as talented as everyone else..
