It seems as though you may be pushing down on the strings too much. I suggest you gradually let go of your hand pressure until you hear only the muted sound.

how do you pluck when you have nails that are "mounted" closer to the tip of the finger? in other words, how do i play without accidentally using my nails?

Obviously short nails help. Then change the angle of your fingers to about 45 - 60 degrees to the string and bring your fingers back a bit (toward you). I hope this helps. Let me know.

Your lessons are fantastic. But i have 1 unrelated question - i just bought a bass and now after a couple day of playing 1st fret doesn'T produce any clear tones anymore, only buzzing. Could it be because i messed a bit with the bridge? I did that because on the first day a screw fell out of the bridge and i lost the spring. so i screwed them a little tighter so that they don't fall out. Would be awesome if someone could help. Cheers!

Hello. I'm happy to see you like my lessons.
There are two possible causes (that I can "see" right now) that could lead to this effect:
1. The action (the height of the strings at the bridge) is incorrect
2. The bass neck is convex instead of concave.
Both issues can easily be adjusted by someone with knowledge and skills.
I suggest you take your bass to a pro for a setup or check out some of the bass setup videos on You Tube to get further insight.
Bass of Luck!
