Original members of the Speer Family delight the students at Ben Speer's Stamps/Baxter School of Music, Nashville, August 1994. This particular selection features some "shape note singing" which is taught at the school, and not as easy as it first appears.
Let me tell you, singing the syllables without LOOKING at them is VERY hard to do! You have to have the pitch for each note ingrained in your mind! My Daddy was also a shape-note singing school teacher for over 60 years and this family is the first one I have seen do this. I can do it also (from attending probably more than 1,000 singing schools), but it amazes my husband of 55 years (who also reads shape notes) that I am able to do it. Love the Speer Family!
