IHEU representative Cathy Buchs today [8 June 2009] defended Freedom of Expression during a general debate at the 11th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. IHEU applauded the report to the Council by UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Frank La Rue, in which he had advised the Council and the UN General Assembly to desist from further statements regarding defamation of religion. The full text of the IHEU statement is available at http://www.iheu.org/node/3641.

  • well said.

the human rights council is there to protect the rights of individuals. it is not there to protect religions from criticism.

blasphemy laws wherever they exist, must be abolished.

no one has a right not2be criticised satirised or mocked.

just because a religion has prohibitions on mockery or so called defamation, doest give them the right to enforce those prohibitions on non believers or even far distant countries.

this is, of course about the crybaby tantrum faith called ISLAM!
