This is it! The final match of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka.

It comes down to the two mighty yokozuna - Hakuho and Asashoryu.

Hakuho is fighting for a perfect 15-0 record - he already won the Emperor's Cup based on the results of matches yesterday.
Asashoryu is fighting for pride - wanting to show that despite his 11-3 record going into today's bout, that he still has what it takes to defeat Hakuho.

The match starts at about the 5min mark in this vlog.

Jason

  • I got a Japanese newspaper in Japantown!! (San Francisco) It was about Hakuho winning (with a picture of him and his BIG trophy. and about Asa losing 3 matches! it was cool =P

  • Saw day 13 in Osaka...watched days 14 and 15 on the tube while in Kyoto! Just became a major fan and loved seeing Hakuho win 15-0!

Are these tournaments ever shown on U.S. television?

  • hate to admit assashouryuu's era is gone, at the same time hakuho is doing a great job, he deserve this cup. Great coverage, wish could see May's match here again.

  • yeah, but you have guys like takamisakari or harumafuji who can get pushed back to the very edge, be pretty much straight up, and still pull off a throw.

whether or not asashoryu could actually have come back when he was pushed to the very edge isn't really important. the fans (especially the japanese fans) want to see him trying as hard as he can even when he has essentially no chance of winning.
