This years annual commencement ceremony took place on June 18th in the Vigszinhaz. 500 Masters and 34 doctoral degrees were awarded at the university's 18th graduation ceremony. Martti Ahtisaari, 2008 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, former President of the Republic of Finland, and Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Crisis Management Initiative, received the CEU Open Society Prize.
This years commencent speech was given by CEU's President and Rector Elect and CEO of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, John Shattuck. Bruce Lasky (Legal Studies Human Rights 2003), Co-Founder and Director of Bridges Across Borders / Sustainable Cambodia, spoke on behalf of CEU alumni, while Daniel Shapiro, Erasmus Mundus Master's student in Public Policy, addressed the graduates on behalf of current students.
During the ceremony, the Chair of the Student Union Assembly, Elena Starevska, presented Yehuda Elkana with a memory book of CEU for his outstanding service as CEU's President and Rector in the past ten years. Charles Epping of the Central Europe Foundation announced the Dr. Elemer Hantos Prize, awarded to Adam Michnik, Editor-in-Chief of Gazeta Wyborcza.
Students who completed the Hungarian-accredited Masters level specializations were also awarded degrees. Those who completed the Roma Access Program during academic year 2008/2009 received certificates.
