it really blows my mind how christians use the no true scottsman fallacy toward shirley phelps (westboro baptist church) and claim she isnt a "real" christian but then they turn around and exemplify the same kind of bigotry.

I see the same ad hoc fallacy with christian beliefs. One group denies the importance of a particular tenant, while another insists on its essential nature. This is part of how I arrived at atheism, if you deny aspects ad hoc, you have to go back to first causes to establish your basis for belief. Then I realized there was no "there" there. It was argument by authority. =>FAIL

A part of me truly wishes you hadnt thrown that last bit in there, because based on encounters I've had with fanatics, I wouldnt put it past them to start killing any who would represnt anything against the word of their god. Seriously.

I was trying to point out that basing decisions on the bible required dealing with other passages as well. I hoped to emphasize the absurdity of it.
Of course, they still might want to beat the love of Jesus into me ;)
