Run one clock, pistons 1 and 3 on the same timing, pistons 2 and 4 on the alternate timing (2 tick delay on a repeater). It will significantly reduce the time it takes for the elevator to move and work consistently each time it is built.

Timing is not impossible to make it perfect. If you run all of them off the same clock.. make the pulse ON for 2 ticks and off for 10 using a pulse limiter... then you can have the first one go (2 pulses) wait a tick (3 pulses) second go (5 pulses) wait a tick (6) third go (8) wait (9) fourth go (11) wait (12) repeat.
