This Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae) butterfly larva pupates and later emerges as an adult. The other pupa tries to eclose but is unsuccessful, and dies during the process. Much more butterfly/moth video, photography and life cycle studies available free to the public at HTTP://jcmdi.com, and the Hi-Res version of this video is available on DVD at http://technician.jcmdi.com/lepdvd01/lepdvd01.html for details.

  • Awsome

it takes alot of patience for this.

    Well Done.Great Job

  • Thanks for the nice note! I have a ton of bug videos online (and more coming soon!) - be sure to check out my channel or profile, and website too. :-)

  • there were 2 butterflies in 1 cocoon?

  • Actually there are two cocoons (chrysalids) shown in this video. I moved them together using the same attachment point on the branch because it looked like they both might emerge at the same time - and they would have, if the lower one had been able to finish. Instead, it died before eclosing while the upper one eclosed successfully.

  • well that's kind of sad.

  • Yes it is - it seems to happen a lot in nature. I've gotten used to it, but it helps it helps to focus on the successes. :-)
