"American Meat," a feature documentary about a grass-roots revolution in sustainable farming -- starring Virginia's own Joel Salatin and his Polyface Farms -- explains how America arrived at its current industrial system, and shows you the feedlots and confinement houses, not through hidden cameras but through the eyes of the farmers who live and work there. The story shifts to the burgeoning movement of farmers, chefs and everyday folks, influenced by Salatin's ideas, who might just change everything about the way meat reaches the American table.

    (a) He didn't say "a million dollars in profits." He's not stuffing that money under his mattress. It's going to manage the farm. (b) The internship is worth far, far more than $100 per month---many if not most of his interns go on to start successful farms of their own. (c) Funny that, though the wages are apparently so low, the waiting list for a Polyface internship is still astronomical. I guess it really doesn't bother the interns like it bothers you.

If you are interested in getting food from farmers go to eatwild(dot)com/products/index(dot)html and from there it will show you a list of farms near by.

A million in sales? I guess he forgot to tell his daughter-in-law.

"We know times are tough. Nobody got a bonus at Polyface in 2011. We're glad we escaped the year without a loss--barely."

Making a million dollars in sales while paying $100 a month to intern laborers. Kudos

Its all going the same way in the U.K. The big supermarket chains are to blame. Their greed is threatening out health, and the livelihood of traditional farmers throughout the U.K and the rest of Europe.

I never buy meat from them, I always buy from local butchers who sell produce supplied by local farms. The difference in the taste and quality of the meat is amazing.

If everyone could afford to support their local suppliers, the major players would have to up their game. It's such a shame.

makes me sick. theres no reason farming should be so "factory" if you cant afford organic, fresh, humanely treated meat, don't buy any meat at all.

Awesome stuff joel. We're starting our own pastured poultry farm this year, with our kids working side by side with us.
