Read the book THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE.  Scorsese and Robertson made the film that they wanted to spin Robbie as the main front man. To watch the movie you'd think that he sang on most songs, in reality the three part harmonies and lead vocals were developed by Manuel, Danko and Helm. Robert was simple preening in front of the mike.

@IanRoantree the band was a confluence of five amazing players at the right time. robbie did NOT make the band what it was, nor did levon or any of the others. but when they stopped working well together and listening to each other (let's not forget richard, rick, and robbie were all addicts of one kind or another at this time, especially richard) thats when it fell apart. scorcese's editing did not help things.

@00Jackacid coll, innit? he had his strat modified that way. that actual pickup switching configuration isn't changed. its basically the middle pickup moved back. so they are still parallel with the middle reversed in that second selector position, but it certainly would change the sound. he also had that model bronzed, which if you listen to the commentary added about ten pounds in weight. he changes guitar halfway through because the damn thing was so heavy.
