Solar Richmond is lighting the way for communities to take part in a clean energy future that not only repowers homes and businesses but also empowers people. We promote solar power and energy efficiency, provide green job training in solar panel installation, and open doors to employment in secure solar industry jobs. Each of our intensive five-week training sessions includes two installations of full solar-electric systems on low-income Richmond residences.
Weve already come a long way. Recently, we convinced the City of Richmond to pass a solar thermal rebate program linked to local green jobs a groundbreaking first nationwide! As our eighth solar training wraps up, we have placed more than ten of our graduates in temporary solar jobs and 21 graduates in well-paying, full-time, green-collar positions. Through our solar staffing agency, Solar Richmond has helped install over 700kW solar power throughout the Bay, which amounts to more than a football field of panels and will offset more than 14,700 tons of dangerous pollutants from entering our atmosphere.
As Solar Richmond grows, we have been blown away by media attention. Van Jones, the visionary leader of the green jobs movement, highlighted us as a national model in his New York Times bestseller, The Green-Collar Economy. With him, we have also been featured in sources as popular as Time Magazine, Dan Rather Reports, NPR, and Oprahs O Magazine. Van and his organization, Green For All, deserve a huge Thank you! for their help in these pieces. Now, however, Solar Richmond is creating its own media. Our graduates have incredible stories to share we are turning the spotlight toward them.
Solar Richmonds first digital storytelling project was an opportunity for solar training program graduates to take part in an intense three-day writing, sound, and visual production workshop. Each participant created a three-minute video showcasing his or her voice and images. Solar Richmond is committed to continued leadership development even after our graduates leave the training center and find solar jobs. The project emphasized writing skills, photography techniques, and computer training. Our goal is to help our graduates use these media tools to share and value stories from their lives in ways that promotes artistic expression, health, and justice.
Solar Richmond already knew how powerful our graduates' voices are now were able to share these stories with the world!
