@AdolescentGorilla - I don't quite understand - what's your source for that info? In the original version the chorus isn't in the same high register as Cyndi's take, correct?

She's not telling the truth. In actuality, Cyndi Lauper has voice problems and she tries not to hit the high notes unless it's absolutely necessary. So when she claims she's singing some "original" version of her song(s), she's really not. Straining for notes that she's not really equipped to reach has caused vocal chord problems for Cyndi. This is a problem for lots of rock/pop singers who scream their way through songs rather than sticking to their natural range.
