CFA's Director Community Safety Lisa Sturzenegger tonight (2 March 2009) warned the Victorian community of severe weather conditions over the next few days.
Lisa also discussed today's SMS warning campaign and appealed to community members to activate their fire plans now. She said if their plan is to leave, they need to do it tonight (2 March 2009), before conditions deteriorate.
The mobile service providers should be doing the SMS notification as a public service. The cost to the service provider of a single text message is negligible (especially if they can stagger them to avoid overloading the network) but can potentially save a life.
The service providers have the geographically cross-referenced databases. It was ALWAYS possible for them to do this. It should be a condition of their licenses.
The private information never needs to change hands.
Good luck.
