In his review of last Tuesday's recital by the Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, Rick Schultz writes, (He) "turned UCLA's Royce Hall into the Moscow Conservatory Tuesday night.-------"Matsuev,36, is a virtuoso in the tradition of Gilels,Richter and Horowitz. He revels in playing at speeds almost too fast to absorbs. At slower tempos,he creates a lovely, delicately judged musical flow." The program was gargantuan with Schubert's Sonata in A minor (D.784) and Beethoven's"Appassionata" followed, after intermisiion, by Grieg's Sonata in E minor and Stravinsky's Three Movements from "Petrushka." . He gave four delightful encores. One could quibble here and there, but for me, it was one of the most exciting recitals that I have attended in years.
Id love to hear the Schubert and Grieg sonata and this is heavy Scriabin perhaps climaxing too quickly but the best I ve heard till yet.Bravo!

I like that he takes rhythmic license. But not how I would play it if I only could! :(
