I Said to Love is a set of six songs, all to words by Thomas Hardy that was grouped together by Finzi’s widow and son after the composer’s death at the age of 55 in 1956. The songs date from two different periods in Finzi’s creative life. Half of the songs come from Finzi’s period of intense creativity in the late 1920’s through to the outbreak of the second world war while the remaining three were all the written in the last year of his life. The six songs exemplify Finzi’s reputation as an extraordinary setter of English poetry and in particular the words of Thomas Hardy. Finzi’s affinity with Hardy was such that over half of the 100+ songs that he wrote were to Hardy poems. Like many of his other settings of Hardy’s words these songs deal with love and loss, the transience of life, and the workings of cruel and malign Fate.
Lesser well known work. pretty voice. Could use some technical work.
