Here we have Maisie, a Holstein-Friesian breed of dairy cattle originating in North Holland and Friesland. Commonly called Holsteins in the United States, these large cattle with sharply defined black and white spotted markings are believed to have been bred for their dairy qualities for two thousand years. They produce a high yield of milk which has a low butterfat content. Maisie lives at Park Farm, Ramsbottom, in Lancashire (UK) and because I am so fond of cows, I gained permission from the farmer to take a few photographs and so this is one of them. I spent half-an-hour with Maisie who was very friendly and she soon settled down for lunch as you can see in the video. Notice the beautiful valley of Ramsbottom - home of the East Lancashire Railway - in the background. The date was Sunday 26th August 2007.

  • how much milk does she give per day? :) tnx

  • Finding this, just warmed my heart...

  • @johnwantling My brother used to feed his cows wet brewer's grain which had been used to make alcohol. They loved it. My friend wraps high moisture hay in plastic and it ferments. You'd think it had gone bad but the cows will choose it over regular hay every time. Corn silage is also fermented. I would think this nice grass and fresh air would be the healthiest choice though.

  • She is so beautiful...! great video...you should continue your friendship with Maisie and report more of her progress and life in the farm

  • I have been looking for such a group of videos. I do not know this one formally, but since the location and name are so well defined I may go sometime to meet her and chat - with her owner's express permission, of course.

  • How did this cow become the star of a video in her name? I'm surprised there are so many comments. Nothing of substance. But people will just say something. No body said don't gank her calf because it bothers me. Obviously she has been retired by some Indian. No cow will earn a retirement anywhere in the world.

  • That is so sweet :) In the winter time, a local farmer uses the meadow on our university campus. I've always wanted to go up an pet the cows but never have.

  • Not all. :p If mom can't feed them or maybe dairy cows: they get fed from a bottle. The ones born on the range can be skittish but you make them used to you.

I have a pet calf, but his friends will come over. I'm working on taming them. :p

  • That's very sweet. But, aren't all cows raised by people since they are domesticated? I've always wanted to go pet one. They seem so peaceful grazing :)
