A fresh and contemporary musical from Tony-Award wining composer Jason Robert Brown. The Last Five Years opens klpac's Resident Directors Season for 2011. The One-act musical will be directed by Co-Associate Artistic Director and Resident Director of klpac, Christopher Ling ( Best Director, Short + Sweet Musical 2010).

The Last Five Years is emotionally powerful and intimate musical about a young couple -- a rising novelist and a struggling actress -- who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show chronicles their relationship in a rather unconventional way: her story starts at the end of their relationship; his begins on the day they met. Funny and uplifting, the show captures some of the most heartbreaking and universally felt moments of modern romance.

Written by Jason Robert Brown, the story was inspired by his personal experience of a failed marriage. The musical premiered in Chicago in 2001 then produced off Broadway in the year after, and it won the 2002 Drama Desk Award for outstanding music and lyrics. The show has since been produced at almost every major regional theatre in the US, and has been seen in Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Spain.

klpac's production of The Last Five Years stars Tabitha Kong (ADAM The Musical) and Jon Chew (ADAM The Musical, Birdy, Cock). Stephen Tok is musical director for the production, which marks his second collaboration with Christopher after his work on Michael John LaChuisa's musical, Bernarda Alba, which was staged to huge success in March last year. The production will also feature projections designed by Candid Photography.

The Last Five Years will be Christopher's only musical theatre piece for this year. After this, he turns his focus back to young people, directing T4YP's (Theatre For Young People) 'first mainstage production in May with a brand new ensemble -- A History of Falling Things by British playwright James Graham.
