Saint John's teen pregnancy rate is the highest in New Brunswick, and it is nearly double the national average. For every 1,000 teen girls in our community, about 42 will become pregnant. That's a number we need to change.

One way we hope to change this number is by increasing awareness among Saint John's teen girls and boys about how hard it is to be teen parents. That's why we called this campaign Babies: NO RETURNS. Babies are for keeps.

Local teens were consulted in all aspects of campaign development, from initial strategy sessions and creative concepts to video scripts and giveaways. Local teens are also the stars of the four campaign videos posted on YouTube.

The reasons why teens become pregnant are complex. Contributing factors include unhealthy relationships, limited access to birth control, low self-esteem, inadequate sex education, substance abuse, family influences, low literacy and education, poverty and finally, the age-old teen belief that "it won't happen to me."
