David Slade and Brian Nelson points out in the commentry on the dvd that the overall budget was less than one million dollars, and it was shot in 18 days, leaving very little margin for errors or re-shoots. That scene was filmed at the stunt director's house with a large mat under the wall. The stunt man jumped and was required to pull the rope tight as he landed on the mat to simulate Jeff hanging, but to do this he brought his arm up, which had to be digitally erased which makes it look fake.

I think Jeff crashed to the floor and fell inconsicious, so his ex-girlfriend would find him and discovered he was a pedophile; it was maybe the plan of Hayley, specially considering all the "things" that would be done to Jeff in prison... well, maybe Hayley didn't want him to pass away so easy xD

Im pretty sure there was a *thud* there, which would indicate him hitting the ground.
also its kinda funny. you remember her writing the 'suicide' note on the computer "i tried shooting myself. I couldn't even do that right" or something like that... and now this :P double fail

I really dont thing he died. The way I thought when I first saw the movie is that she made the rope too long. To me she strikes me as a person that would want to see him suffer and would view death as a way out of the consequences that come with his actions. And it would be just like her to make him think something is happening that really isnt (aka the castration). I would be disappointed if he actually did hang himself; it would ruin my perception of Hayley's character.
