This is the music to an often overlooked port of the original Final Fantasy for the MSX home computer. This particular soundtrack makes use of an audio peripheral known as 'MSX Music', or the Yamaha YM2413 OPLL soundchip. This gives it a distinct sound involving FM synthesis, specifically up to 9 channels at once, or 6 if percussion is being used.

From what I've heard, I find that a lot of music from classic NES games don't fare too well across ports. I can't speak highly of the Castlevania music for the MSX, or Double Dragon II for the Amiga, for example. Far too often it seemed that porting over the bare-boned notes and rhythm was a primary concern, and actually trying to make it sound good on its new system was secondary, if an existent goal at all.

I think that the music to the MSX Final Fantasy is certainly an exception, and I'd even say I prefer most of these tracks above their originals. Hope you enjoy these arrangements as I did!

  • So beautiful. It really does sound better than the Nintendo version.

  • I need listen this song long time. Plese upload this song again.Give me this MSX version.Thank you.

  • You should listen to the black mages band's version of ff1 battle theme. It's badass. I agree though this theme was really just destroyed.

  • I feel pity for this music piece..it turned into a electric metallic-style bullshit in the new FF Dissidia game.

  • Best rendition.

  • ファミコンよりも重厚な感じで良いですね。
