I've always loved Peetie Wheatstraw and thought the same thing but then again the best of anything is often relegated to the shadows of history. I've recorded two of his songs for my next album. He's great - Konrad Lenz.
@busessuck1 Quite so. California Desert Blues is the classic (" ... like crossing the Hindenburg Line ..."!) & Hard Time Blues is the only other one I'm familiar with. He made a handful of postwar sides, but I've yet to catch up with 'em
Brilliant! As far as I remember (though I hasten to add I wasn't around at the time!) he only recorded about four sides on guitar, all in a style related to that little group of bluesmen like Henry Townsend, Charley Jordan, Henry Spaulding & Hi Henry Brown, who were based in St. Louis in the late 1920s through the 1940s. Peetie Wheatstraw has long been one of my favorite bluesmen: much more well-known as a piano man of course ...
