This is the winter preview for the latest Joe Public Films documentary-in-progress. The piece focuses on the home heating oil crisis in Maine. (The fall preview is also on YouTube, with the working title of "No Country for Cold Men".)
Why not switch back to heating with coal? Coal is cheap. My dad grew up in the 40s in a really nice home heated with coal. With an automatic coal stoker coal is not as primitive as it sounds.
I did a rough cost comparison of coal vs. oil. One thousand gallons of heating oil has approximately the same BTU heating content as 6.25 tons of coal. As of Dec. 2009 6.25 tons of coal would cost approximately $375.00.
