Mark McDermott sat in the hotseat for two nights on January 12-13, 2000. Things were looking so good for him with his $500,000 question...he had two lifelines left to use. What happened moments later was, at the time, unprecedented...he became the first person to miss the $500,000 question on the American WWTBAM. He would set the bar for future primetime Millionaire contestants who would match this unfortunate milestone, such as:

Lawrence Caplan (1/15/00)
Rudy Reber (2/24/00)
Richard Klimkiewicz (3/2/00)
Kati Knudsen (7/30/00)
Nick Meyer (8/17/00)
and
Raymelle Greening (1/28/01)

David Duchovny also missed his $500,000 question on a Celebrity WWTBAM episode. Thanks to Sashinator00 for that bit of info.

These are all the names from the primetime Millionaire winners list that I got from here: http://www.angelfire.com/ky3/nellylunaticsfan/winners_pt2.html

You could tell Regis was stunned and so was the rest of the crowd, too. Granted, it wasn't the easiest question in the world, and he seemed sure of his answer, but sometimes what you're sure of may not be the right choice.

  • Of course the "Computer" has to leave the 2 ships that were there that day.

  • Your right, that IS your final answer. But I had no clue so I won't judge, just thought I'd make a joke.

  • @RCPlanes59 GSN sped up the shows so they could air more commercials.

  • for a split second there i thought mark was ready to go on a rampage

  • This clip looks sped up...

  • I think people need ot understand that not knowing this doesn't make you dumb. Hell, maybe he DID know it. There was someone on an international verison (Australia?) who knew the answer to the top prize question but panicked and said the wrong answer. It happens.

  • lol Watched all of these million dollar questions and I knew all of them. Can't believe they walked away or in this case failed hard. So glad this guy failed though, didn't like him within the 1 minute mark of this question and he didn't see Titanic.

  • Of course the "Computer" has to leave the 2 ships that were there that day.
