how much would that cost
half million+?

Wow this is beautiful I hope to have a kitchen like this when I grow up.

I've seen them in person (at their kitchen center), and they're actually pretty cool. They can change the speed to be faster--they look slow in the video. And I was freaked about losing power too, but they have a latch so you can open them manually. You can make them out of anything too (mmm--stainless steel!), and even lock them with a fingerprint scanner. Makes me wish I was rich.

it can probably be faster but if it was faster it would seem rickety and unsafe.
-
I'm sure they are counterweighted. Raising them by hand wouldn't be a big deal, just like windows/garage doors can be opened by hand even though they weigh a lot.
-
I'm gathering you don't exactly open each one every time you need something -- if you're cooking you set them all to open and then you have everything you need available right then.
I'd also wager they can make them open a bit faster for you if you want. After all, you're probably paying a couple hundred thousand dollars to outfit your room with these things - faster motor? No problem.
-
they are way too slow.
I don't see how this would be useful.

Holy moly that's ugly. Adds at least a foot of thickness to the top!
-
That is one cool yet ugly kitchen!

GIMME GIMME GIMEE!!!!
So if a gear/motor malfunctions, one must raise a 5-panel lid by hand just to pull a can of corn out? Hmm, seems like too much trouble down-the-road. Plus, I just don't like the look of these multi-paneled vertical doors.
