Saturday 14th February 2009 saw the first visit of new-build A1 class No. 60163 "Tornado" visit the Southern Region (well part of it). The 2008 built pacific worked two Steam Dreams circular specials on Valentine's Day, the first of which, the Luncheon tour, is featured in this video.

The A1 is first seen passing Vauxhall, shortly after departure from London Waterloo at 09:40. The tour's route between Clapham Junction and Woking was via Barnes and Staines, which gave many people a chance to get in front of the Apple Green Pacific by using SWT services via the more direct route of Surbiton and Weybridge. The A1 is then seen passing Brookwood station on the slow lines., heading for Overton on the Andover line. After a stop at Andover, 60163 took its rake of coaches and 67 on the rear through Southampton, Eastleigh and Winchester before picking up the outward route at Worting Junction. The tour is next seen in the setting sun at Clapham Junction, running around 10 minutes late and heading toward London Waterloo. Tornado, 67028 and the rake of coaches used on the Luncheon tour are finally seen at Wandsworth Road station in South London, forming a Waterloo-Battersea Loop ECS move, which was originally routed via Kensignton Olympia but got cut back to Chelsea Bridge due to Tornado "running out of coal".

Emjoy the video!

  • Splendid stuff. Back in the sixties when I lived in Surrey, I spent many happy hours watching trains hauled by Battle of Britain, West Country and Merchant Navy class locomotives thundering through Woking station, to say nothing of the hundreds of less glamorous steam engines that worked the southern region in general. What a delight to see the magnificent Tornado so beautifully filmed in such familiar territory!

  • down the wst end of the London platfrom

  • Thanks alot!

  • Thanks. Where abouts were you at Brookwood?

  • Thanks. Tornado's route in the morning via Staines helped to get in front of it.
