i had one about that size jump on the dock right at my feet the other day..of course that was after about 10 minutes of having to pull him out from under these boats along the docks, and he had my leader around a barnicle covered piling at one point, with a 6 dollar plug at the end of it..sometimes landing the fish doesn't even matter as much to me as not losing an expensive lure

@oranse why not?

I use 4 - 6lbs. diameter braided line. What really matters is the leader you use and how you use it.
I recomend not to triple the line diameter on each tie. If you use 6lbs. diameter braided... Go to a max. 15 lbs leader, followed by a mas. 45lbs. leader and finishing off with a max. 135lbs. leader.
To tie the braided line to the leader I use a few different knots. I'm sure you can fine any on youtube. My favorite is an allbright knot

@cubanola86 no. tarpon are not worth eating. they have way to many spines and besides they're prohibited to kill.

@Unplugged704 Mono. We tried braid so it might be in a few of the vids. But we went back to Mono.

@oranse - when you say 30lb test.. do you mean 30lb - braid or mono?

Got back from my trip to florida today caught an 80lb tarpon on 30lb leader and 20lb mono, crazy as shit

i like tarpons fishing :)

Theres only three tags for tarpon in Florida the capt of the company tarpoon has two of them. There fun fighting but if you want Em in the boat there a pain in the ass I let my clients stand on a sandbar with them once you've worn it out

yes they are..just not very good eating..many people eat them like you would bonefish, ladyfish and gar. Scrape the meat off the bones and make fish cakes.
