@AndrewRudin weber stated that he ''based'' memory on Ravel's Bolero. But if you want to hear the real source of the melody, and it is note for note not just similar listen to Imants Kalniņš Viņi dejoja vienu vasaru. Utube = watch?v=GdN2JcHwars&feature=re
lated . And start at 2:22. This piece was written prior to the film which was made in 1967 -
Try to compare Growltiger (Cats) and Cash/Nelson - Ghost Riders in the Sky - sounds like a variation to me! Sorry - can't post links direct - but titles are both on You Tube.

@AndrewRudin To be fair, my first gcse composition sounded a heck of a lot like memories/bolero and I didn't notice at all until someone pointed it out to me. It's quite easy to do.

And, yeah... Echoes is a chromatic scale... but... really..? Exactly the same rhythm? and 5 notes down/pause/five note back up? Come on.

You forgot MEMORY/Ravel's Bolero. It's amazing what you can get away with, if you just add (or take away) the first note of a stolen melody, or change it from a triple meter to a duple.

he is rich and influencial. That's why he gets away with this. It's not like he had any talent in the first place. He problably knew the right people. Thats how it goes in the business of hollywood. Never noticed most actors are family from other actors who were famous to begin with ? It's all people knowing people ..etc Its all faked

dont be afraid. Webber knows he's stealing...its not just something that might happen

how dare this toad steal from the almighty pink floyd. should have been strangled at birth. atleast zeppelin took from friends WITH there permission.

I think I can take this Phantom opening theme back further to Vaughan Williams Symphony No.2 1st movement.

Wow, videos like this make me afraid to write any music.
Echoes is a chromatic scale, no one owns it

Composers often borrow, but rarely out right 'steal' like this! He settles out of court with the Puccini Estate for Music Of The Night, though....and Don't Cry For Me Argentina's MELODY'S a slowed down Argentinian folk-song!!!!
