The fastest way to remove rust, gunk, or old finish is to use a beadblaster. In this GunTec video Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, cleans the barrels and small parts off a Parker shotgun. Using a standard beadblsting cabinet and fine bead abrasive, this job is quick and easy.

It seems to be expensive technique. I would use ultrasonic bath with cleaner.
Even steel chemical polishing will work as well.

For metal parts, I use Parks Prep and prime (Phosphoric acid). Its used to etch the metal for painting so I do not recommend it for guns but it gets nicely rusticated parts spic and span. The metal is left a nice gray color with no rust.
I just got a sandblaster the other day and I am amazed how well it cleans stuff and it does it lickety split! (jaw dropped) Now, I need a cabinet...should have picked one up at the same time.

Birchwood Casey makes a blue and rust remover which works a treat (and costs less than a blasting cabinet). noxious smell, known to cause birth defects, take all safety precautions - but it'll take any rust right off. google it. please note, it'll strip off bluing too - stuff doesn't discriminate!
