While I do like Lynn Anderson's famous cover version, I like this Joe South original MUCH better, It has more soul and more grit. Sometimes the best versions are not the most well known, but the earlier version(s) as recorded by the writer as is the case with this song.

Also I think Joe South's original version of "Down In The Boondocks" is superior to Billy Joe Royals cover version
