French President Rejects Beijing Threats

CHEN: And more news on the French President. Sarkozy has rejected a warning from China's ambassador to France against meeting up with Tibetan Leader Dalai Lama on his visit to the country. STORY: The Chinese ambassador to France has warned the French President against meeting with the Dalai Lama when the Tibetan leader visits the country next month. But President Nicolas Sarkozy see these comments as out of line. [Nicolas Sarkozy, French President]: "I said that the statement made by the Chinese ambassador was inappropriate and clumsy and they express a certain harshness that I didn't share and that's the story." Sarkozy went on to say that he intents to follow his own agenda. "President Hu Jintao would not have allowed France to impose conditions and I do not think that the Chinese president can imagine that France would accept any conditions. The choice I made was one out of my own conviction. It would be a big problem in the world if China were to drawback within itself in exaggerated nationalism." Beijing's relations with Paris have been strained since April, when Free Tibet demonstrators interrupted the Olympic Torch Relay through the capital with success.
