A State Railways of Thailand sleeper attendant expertly turns the seats into beds in a 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper on the International Express from Bangkok to Butterworth (Penang). Similar sleepers operate from Bangkok to Chiang Mai & Hat Yai.

  • These modern 1990s-built Daewoo cars run in train 1/2 Bangkk-Chiang Mai, train 35/36 Bangkok-Surat Thani-Hat Yai-Butterworth and one or two others.

There are a range of trains to Surat Thani, the most conveniently-timed sleeper train will probably use older cars, but built to a similar layout if that's what you mean.

  • I live in the UK, but keep tabs on SRT as best I can.

  • Try to get this, or any, kind of service in western countries.

I give Asian cultures a lot of credit for quality service.

  • @amarth23 Very similar. Attendant takes your order for dinner as you depart, arrives next station. He also appears with a bucket of ice and a few bottles of Chang. You pay him in the morning.
