contralto Marijana Mijanovic sings the aria "Là, sull'eterna sponda" from the opera "Motezuma" by Antonio Vivaldi with Il Complesso Barocco under Alan Curtis
Là sull'eterna sponda
d'orrida e flebil onda,
ombra seguace or ora sì, m'avrai.
Quanto sia il mio tormento,
figlia mia, non ti rammento;
mira la doglia in me,
pensa all'amor per te,
quanto t'amai.
There on the eternal shore
of the sad and dreadful river
like a shadow following you,
yes, there shall I be too.
How I do suffer,
my daughter, I need not to remind you;
look upon my sorrow,
think of the love I bear you,
and of how much I have loved you.
After a devastating military defeat, Motezuma, king of the Mexicans, wants to fight the Spaniards until death. Before leaving, he gives his wife Mitrena a dagger and asks her to kill their daughter Teutile and then herself if the Spaniards were to capture them. Mitrena hands the knife over to Teutile and asks her to kill herself, assuring her that she will follow her immediately. This is what she is singing in this aria.
A very powerfull interpretation by Marijana of this beautiful aria. Marijana at her best.
