He symbolizes waves imo. It is the waves which choose the direction of the bottle, and the waves make it difficult for the boy to retrieve the ball, so he kick the "waves". The waves killed the woman. It was the "wave", who brought something he though was valuable on land, but turned out to be a dead bird. And when the kids see the "wave" they destroy the sand castle, since it would have been destroyed regardless by the waves. And when the teens are throwing petrol bombs at the waves, he dies

The first time i saw this video, it was 2 in the morning, and my lights were out in my room, and the Death guy scared the crap out of me.
