Though to be fair, no one ever really thought the earth was flat. Columbus' entire plan revolved around a spherical earth. He just incorrectly estimated the size by about 2/3 and ran into an entirely new continent.
Why do you think Native Americans are known as Indians? Because Columbus thought he hit India.
