Locus Pro walkthrough. An online/offline, GPS, compass, geocaching, tracking, POI, navigating app used by TRUE explorers. In app settings/data: GPS signal/satelites/altitude, lat & lon degrees, tracking accuracy/track width/update interval, google MyMaps importing, weather/forecast, share location, downloads of maps from PC to SDcard/Locus server to phone download/import/export maps, import/export tracks, location, POI & geocached locations. Online, personal, Vector, WMS, downloaded maps selections. All actions mentioned above available in background to permit normal phone usage. Locus Pro for Android application only
If you haven't paid attention to the Vector Maps capability by now, you probably will want to do that. They take a lot less space, with no need to download different zoom levels. Here's an article explaining what they're about. YouTube doesn't seem to allow links, so query under-hood-of-google-maps-50-for Android.

That's a nice program, but I would recommend you and all the hikers around to check out Orux Maps. It is completely free (and open source!) and in my humble opinion way more powerful, although definitely less intuitive to use. My two cents. Cheers
