The earliest photo studios didn't have powered lighting, they had large windows and photographers used daylight as their light source.

I recently had the power go out just as my makeup artist was finishing work on my model for a creative beauty shot.

Instead of pulling out the electric making gadgets, I decided to use Mother Nature and the fact that it was a very overcast day due to inclement weather. I moved my model out of the studio and placed her in front of three large windows and just a few feet in front of a painted wall that became my background.
