Nearly 50 years after it first premiered, Doctor Who remains as popular as ever. Doctor Who first hit the airwaves in 1963. Three years later, in 1966, when the actor to originate the roll, William Hartnell, became too ill to continue, the creators had a brilliant idea. Regeneration. This simple solution has allowed for the role of the Doctor to be played by numerous actors throughout the years. A brand new character and yet the same. An issue that would have ended most programs was turned into a benefit for the franchise.
