A motion sensor activates a wheel. The wheel causes an arm to sweep across the surface of a circle inlaid with designs made of holographic foil.

Light sensors on the arm pick up the reflections from the foil and activate gears and reels that pull on cables. The cables are attached to bamboo cylinders which are partially submerged in water.

As a cylinder moves up and down through the water, its interior space is compressed and decompressed resulting in an airflow into, and out of, the cylinder. The air flows past an organ reed inserted inside of the cylinder. The reed vibrates and creates a note.

Different cylinders are outfitted with different reeds in order to produce a full spectrum of notes. Twenty four notes are produced by twenty four cylinders, which are controlled by twenty four light sensors, which are activated by the patterns on the circle.

  • This will be installed at 163 East Pender in Vancouver for the duration of the month of February and free to the public as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

  • This man is a crazy genius! (And I don't mean crazy in a negative way) I love that he takes 18 steps to make air flow past a reed when all you'd have to do is blow in it yourself! What a show off. hahahaha
