What are recruiters looking for in an MBA graduate?
Anna Parkin, director for global development: "Recruiters want more than just graduates that have business knowledge, employers want graduates who are globally-minded so they certainly need people who have the skills, the knowledge. They also need people who have soft skills, good communication skills and an awareness of what it's like to do business in different cultural settings.
We also try to encourage our students to broaden their experience even more. We have partnerships with more than 40 business schools around the world and we encourage students to do an exchange programme and they would do this after their course subject.
They would do this in the UK, they certainly wouldn't be coming back to this region - they would be trying to get a different experience so we would recommend that they go to either one of the US schools or one of the Asian schools."
Why is diversity important on an MBA programme?
"We look for diversity in terms of academic and industry background, so what we are trying to achieve is a very diverse class, a good mix of students and that's because in the MBA classroom the learning is very interactive and very experiential and students actually learn from interacting with their peers more so than what they read in the text book and for that to be successful then you really do need a large group of students that have different backgrounds and bring different ideas into the classroom and different ways of solving problems.
We have more than 80% international students from all over the world and we have quotas of no more than 10% from any one country."
Why Melbourne Business School?
"Well to start with Melbourne is a lovely city to live in. It was recently voted the 2nd most liveable city in the world by The Economist, it's quite a healthy economy, in Australia we didn't go into recession like the rest of the world, but it's just a very nice place to be and to study. Melbourne Business School itself attracts students because of its international flavour. Our faculty is certainly very international, our curriculum is very international, but our students are very diverse.
The other thing that is attractive about the modern business school is ........ nature. The average class size is about 45 and again that helps with building networks, getting to know the other students in the classroom and having personal contact with the lecturers."
