I ran into a friend of mine shopping with her daughter who was getting ready to go off to college. I asked her daughter if she was excited about going off to college and was surprised to hear her express a lot of worry and concern over what to study. I know when I was in college I didnt think much about it because at that time as long as you had a degree, getting a job was pretty certain. Unfortunately, that isnt the case anymore.
With a sagging economy, graduating college students arent finding jobs. They are moving back in with mom and dad and waiting to find a job in their career. I spoke with one college graduate who was so frustrated because she cant leave her waitressing job because there is no work in her field. Shes been working there since high school.
As students get ready to start their first year in college they have a tough decision to make regarding their college major. Listed below are the 5 top college majors that students should consider if they want to find work when they graduate.

1. Engineering
Electrical
Mechanical
Computer
Chemical

2. Health Care
Nursing
Physician Assistants
Physical Therapists
Medical Assistants
Medical records
X-ray technicians
Dental Hygienists

  • I majored in media--which is what I'm "wired for"--but I'm about to wind up homeless because I'm not able to do physical labor or prolonged standing. Disability says that I can work in an office, but I haven't even been able to get an interview for an office job, even through a temp agency, but they say that's none of their concern.

  • @scottandrewhutchins Thanks for your comment. Very sorry about your job situation, but I wanted you to know that a career test would help you find other jobs that match your "wiring." So many are going back to school to diversify their education and training and make them more flexible and diverse in the job market.

  • can you do your majors classes at the same time as your minor classes? can you mix them up? or do you have to finish your major then do your minor?

  • @ParkLeeNa You can mix them up. Sorry for the delay in responding

  • @sitdownkid3 I would recommend that too.......if one does not mind getting murdered on the street or ending up in the joint.

Boulder, Colorado is a good place for aerospace engineers. There's lots of reputable research facilities including Ball Aerospace and Lockheed Martin. I have some friends who went to CU for that very reason.

  • @IwillKillYourCereal

Where would you be more able to find a job in engineering? Specifically aerospace.

  • Major in a field that has do with a lot of Math. Trust me it pays off. If you want to major in a field like that you will love the salary. Everyone is saying go with your passion but you are still not going to be happy.

Small salary = not happy; Big Salary = prosperous, happy, but what ever you want!

  • It also depends on where you live. I have friends who have graduated from pharmacy school or nursing school or have a B.S in Engineering and had quite a tough time finding work. They soon discovered that they had to move away to another state, where the jobs were. Artists are much more likely to find a job in an urban area as opposed to a rural one. If you choose a less marketable major, then be sure to get internships and make loads of connections!

  • @namitsu1 But you kinda have to do something that's going to provide for you. Especially if you plan on having kids. Don't make your kids suffer because you HAVE to be an artist.

  • @gounc93 It's all about internships anymore.

  • Should i go to a less selective university with a decent business program, or should i go to a more selective school and get a communications degree? Either way i think i am fucked for life.

  • @TotalLifeMedia I agree. The days when you can just have a degree and get a job is gone. Employers now not only want you to have a degree but they also want you to have some kind of experience. The expereince is more important to them than the fact you have a degree. So if your in college. Go to your career fairs and get a internship in the kind of job you would like to get into. Do the internship well and hopefully they will offer you a job once you graduate if not the intership is valuable..

  • @superbassify I agree. If you tell everyone to go into nursing as they say right now everyone goes and gets a nursing degree and then market is then flooded with tons of nurses.

  • This title is just idiotic. Do at college what is your PASSION.
