British Railways Class 8P 4-6-2 No 71000 with a special heading north on the East Coast Mainline at Holmegreen Crossing, near Biggleswade, UK, June 2005.
Hard to believe that not so long ago she was a rusting hulk in a South wales scrapyard....

  • Thanks for posting this clip. Must rank as one of the most skilled restorations to date.

  • A pleasure - it's actually one of my favourite locomotives - not least for it's charmed survival after withdrawal. Let's also not forget that if it wasn't for the horrific Harrow & Wealdstone crash in which the 'Princess Anne' was destroyed, the Duke may never have been built...

  • A wonderful beautiful machine, I do so deeply wish that some American passenger locomotives had survived into preservation. However sadly most did not. The story of 71000 is heartwarming, a hope to all.

  • O look there goes Harry Potter.

  • The team who have saved this wonderful machine from the gas-axe should feel proud looking at this, not only does it look mint, but it performs like it has just been newly built......or in the case of this machine, better than new, as, it was fitted from new with the wrong grate in the firebox, & a dud chimney design...then slated by BR for not performing well!!!!! Although they knew about the chimney ( cheepness ruled the day ) their steam egg heads actually missed finding the fire grate error

  • didnt see him wave

  • yea the mighty duke my fav

  • Great video!

Duke of Gloucester was the only British Railways Standard Class 8 locomotive built for heavy express trains - similar looking but more powerful than the 'Britannia' Class 7

  • From an Australian point of view this a classic steam locomotive and combines great looks and balance with ample power and speed to burn. Not large by some Australian standards but has amazing capabilities for hauling long passenger trains at generous speed.Britain built some great steam locomotives over many years (and many came to Australia from North British/Vulcan and Armstrong-Whitworth) and a few have been restored)Just love the Gresley Pacifics as well...who does not?

  • Oops! My brain fell asleep momentarily. It's an 8P.

  • This is an 8F, I think. But I know what you mean, I'll just have to wait 'till I'm old enough!

  • it must be fun to operate one of those beauties! I've always dreamed of driving an A4 myself!
