How to block a knit hat.

We constantly get questions from customers asking us about how to care for their most cherished items. This was a request we got from twitter about how to block a knitted hat.

Step 1. Fill your sink/basin with water and Soak. (We used a blue Phil basin in this video. Visit soakwash.com to purchase one)
2. Put your hat in to soak for 15 mins. Make sure there is enough water for your hat to move around.
3. Gently squeeze out the water. Avoid wringing which can stretch out your hat and distort the shape.
4. Lay flat on a towel and line up the cables and stripes so that they are straight. Roll the hat in the towel to absorb the excess water.
5. Use a hat block, balloon, container or a drying rack to dry your hat.
6. Line of the stripes/cables and shape your hat into it's desired shape.
7. Leave to dry.
8. Enjoy wearing your hat.

  • Re. the colour of the water... sometimes overdye comes out in the water, from the yarn or dirt and oils come off the yarn which both contribute to the colour of the water not being as fresh and clear after as they were before. Same thing happens in the washing machine, we just don't see inside to know.

  • It's not like starching it, it's more like rinsing off all the dirt from your hands, after knitting something, or all the oil from your hair that would transfer to hat while wearing it, and when you clean the knits, you have to reset the stitches into their original shape for while it is drying, so it looks as lovely as it did the first day!

  • I don't get what you are doing

  • @GGeey We are showing how to block a finished hat using a no-rinse laundry wash called Soak. This process helps to even out, shape, and clean the knitted piece.

  • whats "block" mean?

  • @TheIcedude545 Blocking is a process that is encouraged after you finish knitting a piece. It helps shape the garment, and opens up the pattern. When blocking a hat, it will help shape the hat and help even it out.
