A group of students from Frontier College's Beat the Street program talk about the benefits of integrating art with literacy.
This video was made during a 5-month art project that highlighted the discovery of student voice through a variety of media that included photography, poetry and collage. The resulting show, Literacy Outside the Box, was an inspiring and thought-provoking display of artwork and images that explored a diversity of difficult themes.
The project was inspired by a growing movement that recognizes the advantage of including art in literacy programming. Art provides an alternative means to explore complex ideas, and allows students to write and express themselves in words or images that are not bound by the confines of traditional literacy practices. Recent research has identified many ways in which art contributes to the literacy environment, including building community, self-esteem, and confidence, reducing stress, bringing emotion to the classroom, and helping students discover strengths as well as different ways of learning and knowing.
Frontier College's Beat the Street: Literacy and Basic Skills offers literacy upgrading and other skills to youth. It works towards providing a learner-centered and holistic experience for its students.
