Can anyone tell me what is making noise - this is a Volkswagen 2004 Passat 1.8T GLS
Volkswagen Passat 2004 1.8T GLS Engine Diagnosis Car Noise Clicking Ticking Sound Lifter Maybe ... Can anyone tell me what this noise is? Some tell me it is the lifter (engine) Sound originates in rear of engine area. Noise is not constant - it comes and goes. I hear it more when I start up the vehicle!
The Check engine light has nothing to do with it. Check engine is because the top of the fuel tank is rusted and therefore evaporating some gas. Why would a 2004 vehicle rust at the top of the fuel tank???

  • It's the fan belt tensioner, I have the same problem with my 2006 VW Passat.

  • I change the oil if nothing happens the noise continue.

    somebody now i can fixe

  • put some oil in it :)

  • Had this same problem with my 2000 vw passat 1.8t, The sound was from bent valves.

  • your engine management light is in the diesel and air mix is rong car needs to go on computer

  • Also do you keep up with regular servicing of the vehicle with the proper Viscosity oil? If not that could be a possible outcome though you cannot expect from a sound we can diagnose it properly and effectively man. Need to have a look in person.

  • camshaft chain tensioner would be my guess. Though bring it in to our workshop and I will hook VAS 5051 up and take a looksy :P

  • Sounds too familiar to me (2003 Passat 1.8T). First check oil (use full synthetic only). Most likely the camshaft adjuster (tensioner) needs to be replaced. It's not a cheap repair (approx. $1400) but might really be necessary in order to avoid total damage. I've seen the old adjuster and the plastic parts that hold the chain were already gone. No problems (nor noise neither check engine lights) after replacements, so far. Good luck!

  • I have the same on my 1.8 T Golf. By what other people are saying on forums and the like, it's the cam chain tensioner!

I'm going to try an oil flush and fill her up with some good quality oil first to see if that fixes it!
