Alexander Belov (Lyubshin) is a Russian spy in the Nazi Germany, working under cover name as Johann Weiss. His perfect German and cool demeanor allow him to make a career in Berlin. After moving from the Baltic to Germany among the many ethnic Germans, he rapidly ascends the ladder of German intelligence all while continuing to work with local resistance movements and against Nazism.

The movie is a product of cooperation of Russian, East German and Polish film studios.
