Several months after the updated graphics seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e-MuQ_c-4Y , the station made a few minor modifications and began using the "Palmer News Package" for it's music. These would be the final changes done before the station became "News 2 Houston" the next year.

Oddly enough, the cut used for the lottery numbers survived well into the 2000s, minus the PNP signature.

And yes, the V/O is done by Al Vanik. His work appears in a number of promos and other items from this time.

  • KPRC Bug flash at :17.

  • Actually, it was a miscue with the timing of a :05 Promo, which I edited out of the montage. It was used at the end of network promos during the time.

The generic bug does appear the Simulcast spot.

  • So this took place after the sale to Post-Newsweek?

  • Before. It was still owned by H&C at this point.

  • Do I recognize this theme as the new theme "Local 2" is currently using after they got away from the "News 2 Houston" theme??

  • The signature is based actually on a theme from WBBM-TV/Chicago in the 70s composed inhouse (hence known as the CBS signature.) Many (if not all then) CBS O&O stations ether used that theme or another theme as an offshoot. This particular theme was WCBS-TV's offshoot, known as the Palmer News Package by Shelly Palmer. This is the second well known package, to The Enforcer (of which WBBM had commissioned and used on and off the last decade or so), as you had assumed.

  • Interesting cuts that KPRC used for the PNP. Especially on the bumpers - mixed a few together!

  • The end signature sounds similar to CBS Enforcer

  • Where's the video where Lisa Malosky falls? I'd like to see that!

  • My favorite weathercast, the great Doug Johnson.
