Clannad with the beautiful Gaelic song 'Thíos Cois na Trá Domh'.

This song is extremely popular in Irish-speaking areas, especially in Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore in English).

Lyrics:
Thíos cois na trá domh, in ndoimhneacht na h-oíche
An saol mhór ina gcodhladh, 's mise liom féin
Na h-éanacha mara ag scairtigh go léanmhar
Cosúil le h-anamnacha bochta i bpéin.

Iomlán gealaí 's iomlán rabharta
Aoibhneas 's ciúineas, 's áilleacht sa domhain
Crónán na farraige ag dul siar ar mo chluasa
Bog-cheol an uisce ag sileadh san abhainn.

Istigh ar na h-inseáin tá sean-reilig bheannaithe
An áit inar mhaireadh naoimh san aimsir fadó
Tá daoine istigh ann ag chaith seal go h-aerach
Ní shiúlfaidh siad thar fán chladaigh níos mó.

Bhuail uaigneas m'intinn 's mé ag amharc ar an reilig
'S mé ag meadhradh ar dhaoine istigh ann ina luí
Fir a's mná óga, seandaoine 's páistí
Muintir mo mhuintir 's cairde mo chroí.

Tá na coiligh ag glaoch 's na réalta ag bánú
Tá an ghealach ina luí 's ní fada go lá
Slán agat anois a shean-reilig bheannaithe
'S na daoine a shiúlfadh liom síos cois na trá.

English translation:

Down by the beach, in the deep of night
The big world is sleeping and I am alone
The sea-birds are calling sorrowfully
Like poor souls in pain

Full moon and full tide
Bliss and calmness and beauty in the world
The murmur of the sea going into my ears
The soft song of the water flowing in the river.

Above on the headland* there is a blessed old cemetery
The place in which saints lived in times long ago
There are people within spending a while carefree
The will not walk round on the shore any more.

Loneliness strikes my spirits as I look at the cemetery
And I'm thinking about the people in there sleeping
Men and young women, old people and children
People of my people and friends of my heart.

The cocks are crowing and the stars are fading
The moon is setting and it's not long until day
Goodbye now blessed old cemetery
And to the people who walked with me down by the beach.

  • I can tell you're not from Ireland lol

"It's Gaelic not Irish" someone better tell 99% of Irish people to stop calling it Irish so....

The correct pronunciation in Irish is Gaeilge btw, Gaelic refers to a group of languages

Why try to correct people on a subject you clearly don't know about? many of us are fluent in it, we don't need a "67% Irish" yank to tell us about our own language

There are actual Irish people on the internet you know, we'll notice if you're talking bullshit lol

  • What's with the whole "I'm Irish and you're not" crap? Seriously, it's a bit elitist for you to dictate what nationality someone identifies with. Just enjoy the song.

    (I'm not Irish btw.)

  • @Isthistakenn IRELAND IS A BANKRUPT COUNTRY TODAY. YOU NEED THE TOURISM MONEY. YOUR SUMMER ECONOMY IS RELIANT UPON TOURISM, AND A BIG FEEDER OF THAT COMES FROM THE UNITED STATES. I love Ireland and I am tired of young pricks like you ruining it for the great grandsons of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and the famine who just want to visit your country and get a sense of their family's culture. If people want to claim Irish descent, let them. Typical young Irish internet toughguy eejit.

  • @Isthistakenn "hello I am a stereotypical neo-Irishman, I hate Irish-Americans, don't give a fuck if the real father of the War of Independence, EAMON DE VALERA himself was an Irish-American, and big Jim CONNOLLY wasn't born on the Emerald Isle either, was born in Bonnie Scotland.." You know what? instead of being an arsehole why don't you take Irish-Americans interested in their heritage under your wing and teach them something about your country???

  • Beautiful song!!!
