Wine & Alchemy performs the traditional English ballad "Matty Groves" with a world fusion gypsy flair at the 2009 Tampa Bay Area Renaissance Festival, Tampa, Florida. With Roxanne Bruscha - vocals, dance; Mark Varelas - Bouzouki; Jake Cooper - drums/percussion; Neil Yamin -guitar. Also with special guest musician Alex Korolov on the viola da gamba (sitting in from the instrumental group Cantiga).
The Ballad "Matty Grooves" has a long history with innumerable variants. It is documented back to at least the early 17th Century and probably dates to much earlier. Some of the more common variants have gone by the name of "Little Mattie Groves", and "Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard". The names of the Lord, Lady, and Lover may change, but the general plot remains the same. In some variants the Lord then kills himself out of remorse, or else is hanged by the law. More history on this song and some and its variants can be found on the internet, and wikipedia is a good place to start.
For more great music, check out the band's website at "www.wineandalchemy.com" They have one CD album and another very soon to be released. Mark Varelas also plays wild sitar on other music.
